Unearther
The GSG Robots
Hello, we are the GSG Robots from Ludwigshafen am Rhein the ugliest city germany and this is our research project: An autonomous excavation robot called "Unearther".
The Unearther
With the help of archaeologist, mechanists and ai-experts we managed to built this robot. It works similiar to a 3D-Printer, just the printing-bed was removed. The Unearther digs layer by layer trough the earth. It uses a shipscrew for digging and a vacuum cleaner to suck up the earth. To make it work it we used 7 Stepper Motor, each with it's own driver, a lot of 3D-printed parts and an Esp32 for controlling. A RasberryPi is utilized for deteckting artefacts (with the image of the camera) and calculating the way around them.

On the website, you can easily operate the Unearther. It looks similiar to this page. You can try to control a 3D-Modell of the Unearther yourself, if you go to the operate-tab. An archaeologist cannot only operate the Unearther using this website, but also see the taken pictures after each layer (history-tab).

At the story-tab, you can read and see wich improvements we made over time and what feedback we got from the different experts.
